How to Use a Domain Name Checker
A domain name checker tells you whether a web address is already registered or still free to claim. What a domain validity check actually tells you
Availability and validity are two different questions. A domain validity check confirms the name is syntactically legal — allowed characters, correct length, a recognised extension — while an availability check confirms nobody has registered it yet. Our tool runs both. If a name fails validation, you will see why: names may use only letters, numbers and hyphens, cannot begin or end with a hyphen, and must be between 1 and 63 characters before the dot.
Reading your results
Every search returns the exact match you typed plus the same name across other popular extensions, so you can compare available domains side by side. A green badge means the name is unregistered and open to claim. A red badge means it is taken — in that case the WHOIS panel shows who holds it and when the registration lapses, which is worth checking before you abandon a name you like. Some owners let registrations expire.
Choosing a name worth registering
Shorter names are easier to say aloud, type without error and fit on a business card. Avoid hyphens and numbers where you can — both cause confusion when someone reads your address out loud. Say a candidate name over the phone before you commit; if the other person has to ask how it is spelled, keep looking. Check that the name is not already an established trademark in your industry, because an available domain is not the same thing as a legally free name.
